All images contributed to the ASDM Digital Library must comply with the following criteria:
For images that you have selected for use by ASDM in publications, newsletters, brochures, public service announcements, thank you cards, displays, slide shows, web pages, mailings and invitations, the high resolution version of the web image may be uploaded during the cataloging process (if the file does not exceed 10 MB) or it may be sent on CD or DVD along with the Digital Image License Agreement. If you elect to upload the high resolution image, please mail a signed contract for these images to the address indicated on the printable form. Detailed steps are listed below:
We can only accept images that you are willing to have available publicly on the web. Each online photo includes the copyright notice that you create during the profiling process. The Photographers page lists contact names & addresses for questions, including a link to your web page if you like.
Users can choose either of two options regarding the permissions granted to ASDM for each image:
ASDM has permission to use the image exclusively for use in the Digital Library. These images will be featured with a thumbnail (not to exceed 200px in its height or width) and a larger image thumbnail (not to exceed 400px in its height or width). In all cases your copyright notice will appear in connection with your image. These images should be no smaller than 400px in either height or width. Larger images will be resized automatically.
ASDM has permission to use the image for inclusion in the Digital Library as described above, and for any other use by ASDM such as publications, newsletters, brochures, public service announcements, thank you cards, displays, slide shows, web pages, mailings and invitations. In each of these cases you retain your copyright for the image but grant us permission to use the image for our production purposes. We request that images contributed for any use to ASDM be of the highest resolution possible. These images should be in either .tif or .jpg formats.
Users can also choose to give ASDM permission to use all of their images for the Digital Library and other museum uses. This requires a signed contract. If you wish to give ASDM permission to use all of your images, you can do so by editing your profile.
Images contributed to the ASDM Digital Library may fall under the "Fair Use" provisions of the U.S. Copyright Law. This means that visitors to the site may use the thumbnail images (those which do not exceed 400px in either width or height) for personal or educational use without requesting permission or paying a licensing fee. Fair Use does not allow visitors to reproduce your work for commercial purposes or use your work in any way which would affect its market value.
Users must contact the photographers to ask permission or seek licensing agreements for any image uses not covered under the "Fair Use" provisions of the U.S. Copyright Law. Contact information may be found on the Photographer's page. If you are unable to locate contact information for a specific photographer, please contact the Production Coordinator for assistance.
